The engine is a direct-injection 2.0L TiVCT l4 (Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing 4-cylinder) which provides improved torque and reduced fuel consumption. In fact, the 2012 Ford Focus will be the first 2012 model year automobile released to meet the new fuel economy requirements sets by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2.0L engine will produce 155 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Although initially released with a 2.0L engine, Ford plans to eventually add the option of an EcoBoost engine which will deliver upwards of 200 horsepower. Using Ford's patented EcoBoost technology, the EcoBoost engine will be 1.6L (slighty smaller than the current 2.0L set-up) yet will deliver nearly 30% more horsepower, making for an even sportier ride.

Another option which is new to the 2012 Focus is a dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission which delivers seamless gear changes while combining the ease of use of an automatic transmission and the fuel economy of a manual transmission.
