2015 Ford F-150 Versus 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500

The Ford F-150 was just named Truck of the Year. This is not surprising, given that the F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for 38 years. So when you factor in a bold new redesign that makes the F-150 lighter, stronger, and more efficient than ever, and the fact that someone buys a new F-150 every 43 seconds, you can see how the 2015 model was bound to turn a few heads. Let's see how the F-150 stacks up against the competition. We established last week that the 2015 F-150 runs laps around the Ram 1500, but let's see how the new 2015 Ford F-150 stacks up against its archrival, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. For the sake of an apples-to-apples comparison, we will be looking at the crew cab 4x4 models, each with two different engines. The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has a 4.3L V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. This configuration has a curb weight of 5,162 lbs. A 2015 Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4x4 equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 cranks out 365 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, and has a curb weight of 4,984 lbs. That means that the 2015 F-150 equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost generates 28% more horsepower and 23% more torque than Chevy's 4.3L V6, while being nearly 200 lbs lighter. What is truly impressive, is that for the regular cab and extended cab body styles, Ford has created an even smaller V6: a 2.7L EcoBoost that still beats Chevy's 4.3L V6. The 2.7L EcoBoost churns out 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, compared the 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft on the Chevy. Ok, so let's check out the big guns now (these are pickup trucks, after all). For V8 engines, the Silverado 1500 offers a 5.3L V8 and the F-150 uses its 5.0L V8. The Chevy has a slightly larger displacement, but still delivers less performance in every category that counts. In terms of horsepower, the F-150 clocks in at 385 compared to Chevy's 355. In terms of torque, it is a close match, but Ford still comes out on top with 387 lb-ft compared to 383 on the Silverado. Chevrolet lists the maximum payload of its 2015 Silverado 1500 as being 1,710 lbs. With a standard crew cab 4x4 configuration and a 5.0L V8, Ford's F-150 can handle a payload of 2,230 lbs. But Ford also offers a heavy duty payload package that can extend the upper bounds of that payload all the way out to 2,770 lbs. The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 challenges any other full-size pickup truck to step up to the plate and see how it performs against America's Best-Selling Pickup For 38 Years and Counting.
