Facts About the Ford EcoSport: Ford's Newest Crossover SUV

Ford EcoSport Facts

Ford is finally entering the ever-popular subcompact SUV segment with the 2018 Ford EcoSport, a small utility vehicle designed to appeal to a new class of SUV buyer. EcoSport has been in the Ford line-up for a while, launched in 2003 in South America, before eventually expanding to Europe and Asia.

The SUV has finally launch in the U.S., with many of the features millennials who crave connectivity demand. The new EcoSport will feature a redesigned interior and exterior unique to North America, as well as upgraded technology and infotainment systems.

Efficient Engine Options

The EcoSport is available in two engines. The base model gets a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost model with front-wheel drive. Also available is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoSport engine. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Ford’s Intelligent four-wheel drive system comes standard with the larger engine.

Features Updated SYNC 3 System

The EcoSport will get Ford’s new SYNC 3 infotainment system but with a twist: the small SUV will be the first in the automaker’s lineup to feature a high-resolution 8-inch touch screen that juts out from the dashboard to create the illusion that it floats above the console. The positioning is designed to provide both drivers and passengers with better access to the touch screen controls. It will be the largest display screen in the subcompact crossover segment, according to Ford.

Ford says that the hands-free SYNC 3 system enhances the vehicle’s response to driver instructions and features improvements to its ability to recognize conversational voice commands. The SUV will come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a must-have for the EcoSport’s young, connected target audience.

Plenty of Storage

The EcoSport maximizes interior storage space with up to 30 stowage pockets, bins, and hooks placed throughout the cabin. The cargo management system in the rear features a movable floor board and fold-away second-row seats to provide a flat area that makes it easier to move furniture and oversized items.

Ford has emphasized the swinging tailgate featured on the back of the EcoSport. By opening laterally rather than vertically as the trunk of a hatchback would, the EcoSport improves access to the cargo hold.

Smartphone App

The FordPass mobile app is designed to let owners stay connected to their car even when they’re away from it.

The app will allow them to start, lock, unlock, and locate their EcoSport from almost anywhere. It also lets them remotely check information such as the vehicle’s fuel level and odometer reading.
