EV Showdown: Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y

Mustang Mach-E vs Model Y

Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model Y

Both brands have been at the forefront of widespread EV popularity, and both models have seen surges in sales numbers. But which one is best?

EVs have exploded in popularity over the past decade, with many big-name automakers like Ford joining Tesla in the electric vehicle market. Both the Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y share the same crossover segment and are comparable in pricing, so let’s take a look at a few key factors and find out which one wins the Mustang Mach-E vs Model Y showdown.

Tech

Tesla is well-renowned for their incredibly tech-based interiors and quirky features. While both EVs have impressive tech specs, the Model-E has a large advantage in tech layout and feel. Namely, the fact that it contains user-friendly and familiar buttons much like a conventional vehicle, making it more accessible to most buyers. The Tesla Model Y contains all technological features within its 15-inch screen, lacking a traditional driver-centric gauge cluster or any physical buttons. While cool, it’s a little isolating for people who aren’t very tech-savvy, or not very interested in their infotainment system being able to play video games.

Pricing

Both of these popular EVs start at prices just below $44,000, the Mach-E starting at $43,495 and the Model Y starting at $43,990. If you start adding options to your vehicles, the Mach-E pricing maxes out at around $60,000 while the Model Y pricing can reach almost $59,000. So, it’s hard to say who’s the clear winner in this category, but the Mustang does have that slightly lower entry-level price making it just a little bit easier to buy one.

Cargo Area

As crossovers, these EVs should be up to the test when it comes to storage space. The Mustang Mach-E accomplishes a maximum cargo area of 64.4 cubic feet, with the frunk contributing 4.7 cubic feet to that total. The Model Y slightly beats out the Mustang, with a total of 72.1 cubic feet when the 4.1 cubic-foot frunk is added into the count.

Performance

Speed is a big part of an EV's identity these days, and our two competitors are no exception. Both the Tesla Model Y and Mustang Mach-E boast 0-60 times of 3.5 seconds when the top trim is selected, despite differing batteries and power ratings. However, when we compare the 0-60 times of the base trim levels, the Mach-E comes out on top with a time of 5.8 seconds to 60, while the Model Y takes 6.6 seconds. A faster base model is a plus in anyone’s book.
