2018 Ford Edge NH

Despite the fact that the 2018 Ford Edge carries over largely unchanged from last year’s model, this mid-size crossover has a great deal to offer and should be considered by anyone looking to blend crossover capability with cutting-edge technology. Celebrated for its fuel-efficiency and available safety and entertainment options, the 2018 Edge comes in four trim levels and three compelling engine options.

Able to seat five passengers comfortably, including three adults in the backseat, the Ford Edge does offer a few new features to this year’s model. Details like 20-inch premium polished aluminum wheels are available on the Titanium model, while the entire lineup is eligible for any of the four new exterior colors, including Canyon Ridge, Blue Jeans, White Gold, and Burgundy Velvet Tinted Clearcoat.

A Cold Weather package is also available, which provides a windshield wiper de-icer, heated front seats and heated front and rear all-weather floor mats, with heated side mirrors and a heated steering wheel standard on some models.

A feature that has remained constant is the cargo space afforded by the Edge. Keeping the back seats upright gets you 39.2 cubic feet to store items, while dropping the seats down makes extra room at 73.4 cubic feet. Each configuration lands at the high-end of the midsize crossover class.

With so many options afforded by this year’s model, the Edge is just another step in Ford’s mission to “Go Further.”

Performance Matters with the Edge

Engines

This year’s Ford Edge offers drivers a choice between three engine options - each one of which is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. The first powertrain presents as a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Sold standard as front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional for a few extra bucks. Opting for the front-wheel drive model provides enhanced fuel efficiency courtesy of its automatic stop-start function.

Although we are still waiting for fuel efficiency ratings, given the carry-over from last year’s model, it’s safe to assume this Ford Edge will feature 20 city mpg, 30 highway mpg, and 24 mpg combined in the FWD model, while AWD returns 20 city mpg, 28 highway mpg, and 23 mpg combined.

Performance testing administered by Edmunds returned a zero to 60 mph track time of 8.3 seconds, which slots in the mid-range of its same-segment competitors, like the Kia Sorento and Nissan Murano.

A non-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 represents the second engine option, available exclusively on the SEL and Titanium trims. Producing 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, last year’s version delivered 18 city mpg, 26 highway mpg and a combined 21 mpg from its FWD, while the AWD variant returned 17 city mpg, 24 highway mpg, and a combined 20 mpg.

Choosing the Sport, which is AWD only, means drivers will pilot a turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, backed by 315 horses and 350 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy numbers come in at 17 city mpg, 24 highway mpg, and 20 mpg combined.

Towing

Drivers in need of up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity will be happy with either the 2.0-liter or 3.5-liter engine, while the 2.7-liter V6 drops

The Safety You Expect from a Ford SUV

Rich in passive and active safety features, the 2018 Ford Edge earns high marks in federal safety assessments. Boasting a perfect five-star overall safety rating, following government crash tests, the Edge did especially well with respect to total front-impact and total side-impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety bestowed its top rating, “Good,” on the Edge, which performed particularly well in the moderate-overlap front-impact and side-impact, roof strength, and seat/head restraint, or whiplash, protection tests.

Testing by Edmunds returned a complete stop distance from 60 mph of 119 feet, less than expected from the midsize crossover class.

When it comes to benefiting from the best that the crossover class has to offer in terms of capability, comfort, safety, and cargo capacity, opting for the middle ground, provided by the midsize 2018 Ford Edge is the best bet.
